EcN + KPS-TPP (also denoted EcN@KPS-TPP) is a research-stage probiotic delivery system in which the model probiotic bacterium *Escherichia coli* Nissle 1917 (EcN) is encapsulated within keratin nanoparticles coated with tea polyphenols (KPS-TPP). Developed to address the instability of probiotics during gastrointestinal transit, this biologic/nanoparticle-based formulation enhances the acid resistance, intestinal survival, and retention of EcN in the gut. In preclinical studies involving obese mice with induced ulcerative colitis (UC), EcN@KPS-TPP demonstrated the ability to alleviate reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduce inflammatory markers, and modulate the gut microbiota by inhibiting pathogenic bacteria. The formulation is primarily associated with academic research led by Zhimin Jin and targets obesity-related ulcerative colitis.
