ectoin (bitop AG)

Ectoin is a naturally occurring extremolyte, a small organic molecule produced by halophilic bacteria to survive extreme environmental conditions. In topical emollient formulations, ectoin acts as a compatible solute that binds water molecules to create a stable, protective hydration shell (the Ectoin Hydro Complex) around proteins and lipid bilayers. This physical mechanism stabilizes the skin barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and protects cells from environmental stressors and allergens. It is used as a non-steroidal treatment for inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis, providing anti-inflammatory effects and symptom relief (redness, pruritus) comparable to mild corticosteroids in some studies. Ectoin-containing emollients are often classified as medical devices in the European Union.
