This intervention is a metal detoxification regimen being evaluated at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for patients with advanced myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myeloproliferative neoplasm in blast phase (MPN-BP), and chronic myeloid leukemia in blast phase (CML-BP). The regimen consists of the chelating agents edetate calcium disodium (Ca-EDTA) and succimer (DMSA), supplemented with magnesium sulfate and a multivitamin. The therapeutic hypothesis is that toxic metal accumulation in the bone marrow may contribute to leukemogenesis or resistance to standard chemotherapy; therefore, removing these metals via chelation may sensitize cancer cells to treatment and improve clinical outcomes.
