Overview

EDTA + chlorhexidine is a combination of two endodontic irrigants used sequentially or in combination during root canal treatment. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a chelating agent that removes the inorganic component of the smear layer and decalcifies dentin by binding to calcium ions. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, providing effective disinfection against common endodontic pathogens like *Enterococcus faecalis*. This combination is typically used as a final irrigant to ensure both the removal of debris and the elimination of residual bacteria within the root canal system. In the context of Dow University of Health Sciences, it was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial for its antibacterial efficacy in patients with necrosed single-rooted teeth.
