Overview

Efavirenz + 2 NRTIs refers to a combination antiretroviral therapy regimen for HIV infection that includes the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) efavirenz and two nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). The most common fixed-dose combinations are: - Efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (marketed as Atripla) - Efavirenz/lamivudine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (marketed as Symfi and Symfi Lo) These regimens are used as first-line therapy for HIV-1 infection in adults and children. Efavirenz acts by noncompetitively inhibiting HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, while the NRTIs act as chain terminators during viral DNA synthesis. This triple-drug combination suppresses viral replication, improves immune function, reduces morbidity/mortality from HIV/AIDS, and lowers transmission risk[4][5][6][8].
