This is a five-drug combination antiretroviral regimen consisting of efavirenz, emtricitabine, lamivudine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, and zidovudine. All five are small molecule agents used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), while emtricitabine, lamivudine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (a prodrug of tenofovir), and zidovudine are nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). These drugs act synergistically to inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by different mechanisms or at different sites on the enzyme. This combination is not available as a single fixed-dose product; rather, it represents an off-label or theoretical regimen combining multiple approved antiretrovirals. Such regimens may be considered in salvage therapy or complex cases where resistance patterns necessitate multi-agent therapy.
