Overview

Eflornithine + placebo refers to a combination used in clinical trials where one group receives eflornithine and the other receives a placebo for comparison. Eflornithine is an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, an enzyme involved in cell proliferation and polyamine synthesis. It is approved for use as maintenance therapy to reduce relapse risk in high-risk neuroblastoma after prior multimodal therapy, including anti-GD2 immunotherapy. Eflornithine has also been studied for other cancers (such as anaplastic astrocytoma) and was previously used topically to slow facial hair growth in women with hirsutism. The "placebo" component contains no active drug and serves as a control arm in studies.
