Overview

Eflornithine placebo + sulindac placebo refers to the double-placebo control arm of the Phase III clinical trial PACES (Preventing Adenomas of the Colon With Eflornithine and Sulindac), also designated as SWOG S0820. This trial, conducted by the SWOG Cancer Research Network, evaluates the efficacy of the combination of eflornithine (an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase) and sulindac (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) in preventing the recurrence of high-risk adenomas and second primary colorectal cancers in patients previously treated for Stage 0-III colon or rectal cancer. The placebo intervention consists of oral tablets that are pharmacologically inert but identical in appearance and dosing schedule to the active medications, administered daily for three years to maintain the study's double-blind design and establish a baseline for efficacy and safety.
