A combination of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) consisting of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). This specific formulation was evaluated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of cocaine and alcohol dependence. The rationale for its use is based on the observation that substance-dependent individuals often exhibit depleted levels of PUFAs, which are critical for maintaining neuronal membrane integrity and modulating neurotransmitter systems involved in reward, aggression, and mood regulation. By supplementing these fatty acids, the treatment aims to reduce relapse rates, decrease aggressive behavior, and alleviate depressive symptoms associated with addiction recovery.
