Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a combination of two polyunsaturated fatty acids—EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid primarily found in fish oil, and GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid found in plant seed oils such as borage and evening primrose. This combination is used as a dietary supplement to modulate inflammation. EPA inhibits the conversion of GLA to arachidonic acid (AA), thereby reducing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory AA metabolites while maintaining or enhancing anti-inflammatory effects mediated by DGLA-derived prostaglandins like PGE1[1][5]. The combination has been studied for its potential benefits in chronic inflammatory disorders (such as rheumatoid arthritis), dry eye disease, diabetic neuropathy, and acute lung injury[1][5][10]. Mechanistically, both EPA and GLA reduce the production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids; EPA also blocks delta-5-desaturase activity to prevent excess AA formation[1]. Clinical studies suggest that this combination may improve symptoms related to inflammation without causing harmful increases in serum AA levels[1][5].
