Drug intelligence / Profile preview
elemental iron + vitamin D is an investigational combination therapy consisting of oral elemental iron and vitamin D supplementation. It is being evaluated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children, specifically those aged 1 to 5 years. The combination is based on the hypothesis that vitamin D can enhance the efficacy of standard iron therapy by modulating the inflammatory environment and potentially downregulating hepcidin, thereby improving iron absorption and utilization. In clinical research conducted by Nadirah Rasyid Ridha at Hasanuddin University, the intervention involved a daily dose of 3 mg/kg body weight of elemental iron combined with 400 IU of vitamin D. This approach addresses the high prevalence of concurrent iron and vitamin D deficiencies in developing regions and seeks to optimize hematological recovery in pediatric patients.
