Drug intelligence / Profile preview
S838T1 is a generic formulation of elobixibat, an orally active, minimally absorbed, selective inhibitor of the ileal sodium/bile acid cotransporter (also known as apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter or ileal bile acid transporter). Developed by Sawai Pharmaceutical, S838T1 is designed as a film-coated tablet for the treatment of chronic constipation. By inhibiting the reabsorption of bile acids in the terminal ileum, the drug increases the concentration of bile acids in the colon, which stimulates colonic fluid secretion and enhances colonic motility to facilitate bowel movements. S838T1 is being evaluated in clinical equivalence trials in Japan to demonstrate therapeutic equivalence to the reference product Goofice (elobixibat).
