Overview

Elsulfavirine + omeprazole refers to the co-administration of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) elsulfavirine and the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) omeprazole. Elsulfavirine, developed by Viriom (a ChemRar company), is a prodrug of the active metabolite VM-1500A, designed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Omeprazole is a widely used agent for reducing gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase pump. This specific combination is primarily evaluated in clinical pharmacology trials to determine if the increased gastric pH caused by omeprazole affects the absorption and systemic exposure of elsulfavirine. Such studies are critical for NNRTIs, which often exhibit pH-dependent solubility and bioavailability, potentially leading to sub-therapeutic drug levels if co-administered with acid-reducing agents.
