Overview
Emoclot is a human plasma-derived concentrate containing coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) and von Willebrand factor (VWF). It is primarily indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease. In the context of hemophilia A, Emoclot is specifically utilized for immune tolerance induction (ITI) in patients who have developed inhibitory antibodies against FVIII replacement therapy. The presence of VWF in the concentrate is hypothesized to stabilize FVIII and potentially shield it from inhibitor binding, thereby enhancing the success rate of ITI protocols. The drug is currently being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial sponsored by Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, focusing on ITI in pediatric patients under 12 years of age with severe or moderate hemophilia A.
