Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EMP + MOM is an implantable cell-based regenerative therapy developed by Betalin Therapeutics for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. The technology integrates an Engineered Micro-Pancreas (EMP) with a proprietary Micro-Organ Matrix (MOM), a biological scaffold that mimics the natural extracellular environment of the pancreas. This matrix supports the survival, vascularization, and long-term function of either harvested pancreatic islets or stem cell-derived beta cells. Once surgically implanted, the device functions as an autonomous artificial organ, sensing blood glucose levels and secreting regulated amounts of insulin to restore glycemic control and potentially eliminate the need for exogenous insulin injections. The MOM component is specifically designed to provide the necessary nutrients and growth factors to maintain the viability of the insulin-producing cells within the device.
