Overview

empagliflozin + atorvastatin is a combination therapy being investigated for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that reduces renal glucose reabsorption and has demonstrated potential in reducing hepatic steatosis. Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) primarily used for dyslipidemia, which also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may mitigate liver injury in NASH. This specific combination is being evaluated by Badr University in a Phase 4 clinical trial to assess its efficacy in improving liver stiffness, histological scores, and metabolic parameters in obese diabetic patients.
