Overview

Empagliflozin + dulaglutide is a combination therapy consisting of two distinct antidiabetic agents used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin is an oral small molecule that acts as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, promoting glycemic control by increasing urinary glucose excretion through inhibition of glucose reabsorption in the renal proximal tubules. Dulaglutide is an injectable biologic that functions as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, enhancing insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, suppressing inappropriate glucagon release, delaying gastric emptying, and increasing satiety. The combination targets complementary mechanisms to improve blood sugar control and may provide additive benefits for cardiovascular and renal risk reduction. Both drugs are approved individually for type 2 diabetes; their combined use has been studied for additive efficacy but does not have a unique fixed-dose combination product or brand name currently approved[1][4][5][10].
