Overview

empagliflozin + hydrochlorothiazide is a combination of two small-molecule drugs: - **empagliflozin**, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, which blocks renal re-uptake of glucose in the proximal tubules, promoting glycosuria and lowering blood glucose. - **hydrochlorothiazide**, a thiazide diuretic, inhibits the sodium-chloride symporter (solute carrier family 12 member 3) in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney, promoting natriuresis and diuresis. The combination would provide both glycemic control (from empagliflozin) and antihypertensive/diuretic effects (from hydrochlorothiazide). While no unique brand-name formulation containing only these two ingredients currently appears approved, studies have demonstrated their coadministration in patients with type 2 diabetes. There are no significant pharmacokinetic interactions between these drugs when administered together, and their respective effects on glucose excretion, sodium excretion, and renin-angiotensin system activation are additive[1][3]. Empagliflozin was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim/Eli Lilly; hydrochlorothiazide is a generic medication[1][5][6].
