Overview

Empagliflozin + metformin is a fixed-dose oral combination of two antidiabetic agents used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that works by preventing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, thereby increasing urinary glucose excretion and lowering blood sugar levels. Metformin is a biguanide that decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity. This combination not only improves glycemic control but also reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. It is also indicated to lower the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and progression of chronic kidney disease in appropriate patient populations[1][4][5][6].
