empagliflozin + rosuvastatin is a combination of two small molecule drugs: empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used primarily for type 2 diabetes, and rosuvastatin, a potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) for lowering cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular risk. Empagliflozin works by inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal tubule of the kidney, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion, leading to lower blood glucose levels. Rosuvastatin inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver, which leads to decreased plasma cholesterol levels, especially LDL cholesterol. The combination may be investigated or used in populations with coexisting diabetes and dyslipidemia to address both glycemic control and lipid abnormalities.
