Emtricitabine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infection. In clinical practice, "emtricitabine + other antiretroviral agents" refers to regimens where emtricitabine is co-administered with one or more additional antiretroviral agents from different classes (such as other NRTIs, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors, or integrase inhibitors), but is not a fixed-dose or uniquely branded combination. These regimens aim to suppress HIV viral replication, reduce viral load to undetectable levels, and prevent clinical progression of HIV. Emtricitabine acts by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, thereby blocking viral DNA synthesis. The other antiretroviral agents used in these regimens target different steps in the viral lifecycle for synergistic effect[1][3].
