**Emtricitabine + stavudine + efavirenz** is an oral antiretroviral combination regimen composed of three agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. - **Emtricitabine** is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), a cytidine analog that inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with the natural substrate and causing chain termination during viral DNA synthesis. - **Stavudine** is also an NRTI, a thymidine analog that inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase in a similar manner, blocking viral replication. - **Efavirenz** is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds directly to reverse transcriptase, inducing a conformational change and inhibiting enzyme activity. Combination regimens with two NRTIs and one NNRTI are commonly used in HIV therapy, inhibiting viral replication at distinct sites within the reverse transcription process. Emtricitabine and stavudine act as chain terminators after incorporating into the viral genome, while efavirenz binds at an allosteric site inhibiting enzyme function.
