Overview

A fixed-dose **combination antiretroviral therapy** consisting of four agents: emtricitabine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, NRTI), stavudine (an NRTI), lopinavir (a protease inhibitor, PI), and ritonavir (a pharmacokinetic booster and PI). The combination aims to suppress human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication through distinct mechanisms: inhibition of viral reverse transcription (emtricitabine and stavudine) and inhibition of viral protease-mediated cleavage (lopinavir, enhanced by ritonavir's inhibition of CYP3A4 to increase lopinavir exposure). The combination would be intended for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, using drugs from major classes of antiretroviral medications. All four agents have established use in HIV therapy, but there is no widely recognized commercial or unique fixed-dose branded product for this exact four-drug regimen.
