Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Eneas is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor enalapril maleate (10 mg) and the dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker nitrendipine (20 mg). It is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by either agent alone. Enalapril acts as a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to enalaprilat, which inhibits ACE, thereby reducing angiotensin II levels, decreasing vasopressor activity, and lowering aldosterone secretion. Nitrendipine inhibits the influx of extracellular calcium ions through voltage-dependent L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation and reduced peripheral vascular resistance. Together, the two components provide synergistic blood pressure-lowering effects. Eneas was originally developed by Grupo Ferrer and is marketed in Germany and other European countries by Trommsdorff (a subsidiary of Dermapharm).
