Enamel matrix derivative + bone ceramic is a combination regenerative dental therapy consisting of two components: an enamel matrix derivative (EMD) and a synthetic bone ceramic (commonly hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate). EMD, typically derived from porcine tooth buds and containing principally amelogenins, is a biologic material that promotes periodontal tissue regeneration, enhancing new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone formation. Bone ceramic is an alloplastic, osteoconductive material that provides a scaffold for new bone growth. Combined application leverages both biological stimulation and physical support, producing synergistic effects on bone and periodontal regeneration in the management of infra-bony and furcation defects in periodontal disease. EMD induces regenerative processes via upregulation of local growth factors such as transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), while bone ceramic acts as an osteoconductive matrix facilitating new bone formation. This combination is especially used in periodontal and dental implant surgery, often showing improved clinical outcomes (healing, bone fill, stability) compared to either modality alone[1][2][4].
