Overview

Engineered Lactobacillus reuteri (MPN-coated) is a topical live biotherapeutic product (LBP) developed by Shenzhen People’s Hospital for the treatment of acne vulgaris. The therapy consists of a genetically modified strain of *Lactobacillus reuteri* designed to modulate the skin microbiome and potentially deliver therapeutic factors to the site of infection. To enhance stability and efficacy, the bacteria are encapsulated in a metal-phenolic network (MPN) coating composed of zinc sulfate and tannic acid. This coating provides additional antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, protecting the probiotic from environmental degradation while synergistically targeting *Cutibacterium acnes* and reducing skin inflammation. The drug is currently being evaluated in clinical trials as a topical cream.
