Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Entecavir + peginterferon alfa-2a is a combination regimen investigated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Entecavir is a potent nucleoside analogue that inhibits the hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA polymerase, effectively suppressing viral replication. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a pegylated biologic that acts as an immunomodulator, stimulating the host's innate and adaptive immune responses to clear the virus. This combination is often studied as a sequential therapy, where entecavir is used to rapidly reduce viral load, potentially restoring immune function and enhancing the subsequent therapeutic effect of peginterferon alfa-2a. Clinical trials, such as the Phase 4 study NCT00917761, evaluate whether this strategy improves rates of HBeAg seroconversion and HBsAg loss compared to monotherapy.
