Overview

A combination therapy regimen consisting of the nucleoside analogue entecavir and the pegylated cytokine peginterferon alfa-2b. Entecavir acts as a potent inhibitor of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) polymerase, interfering with viral DNA synthesis at multiple stages, including priming, reverse transcription, and positive-strand synthesis. Peginterferon alfa-2b is a long-acting interferon that induces an antiviral state in cells and modulates the host immune response to enhance the clearance of HBV-infected cells. This specific combination is being evaluated in the B-Young-Cure-1 clinical trial (NCT06001424), a multicenter study led by Qing-Lei Zeng, aimed at achieving a functional cure (HBsAg loss) in children aged 3 to 6 years with immune-tolerant, HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B virus infection.
