Overview

Ephedrine + norepinephrine is a combination of two sympathomimetic agents used primarily as vasopressors to treat hypotension, especially in the setting of anesthesia. Both drugs act on adrenergic receptors but with different profiles: - **Ephedrine** acts as both a direct and indirect sympathomimetic. It directly stimulates alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors and indirectly increases the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic neurons, leading to increased heart rate, cardiac output, peripheral resistance, and blood pressure. It is also used for bronchial asthma due to its bronchodilator effects[1][3][7][9]. - **Norepinephrine** (also known as noradrenaline) is a potent alpha-adrenergic agonist with some beta activity. Its primary effect is vasoconstriction via stimulation of alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, resulting in increased systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure[8]. The combination may be considered in clinical settings where rapid correction of hypotension is required or when one agent alone does not achieve adequate hemodynamic response[5]. Both are small molecule drugs administered intravenously.
