Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Epigallocatechin gallate + copper (EGCG-Cu) is a metal-phenolic coordination complex (or metal-phenolic network) formed by the chelation of the green tea-derived polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) with copper ions (Cu2+). This nanomaterial combines the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties of EGCG with the catalytic, angiogenic, and antimicrobial activities of copper. EGCG-Cu has been investigated for various biomedical applications, including as a biomimetic coating for vascular and hemodialysis access stents to prevent in-stent restenosis and thrombosis by catalyzing the release of nitric oxide (NO) from endogenous donors. It is also being developed as a component of wound dressings and hydrogels to promote wound and burn healing, alleviate periodontitis, treat osteoarthritis, and enhance the efficacy of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy in bladder cancer.
