Overview

Epinephrine + tranexamic acid is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients used primarily to reduce perioperative blood loss in various surgical settings. Epinephrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as an agonist at alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction and thereby reducing local blood flow. Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic agent that inhibits the activation of plasminogen to plasmin, stabilizing clots and preventing excessive bleeding. The combination leverages both the vasoconstrictive effect of epinephrine and the antifibrinolytic action of tranexamic acid to minimize intraoperative or postoperative hemorrhage. This combination has been studied in orthopedic surgery (e.g., total knee arthroplasty), trauma, plastic surgery (e.g., blepharoplasty), and other procedures where blood loss control is critical[1][2][3][6]. While some studies suggest safety and efficacy in reducing hemoglobin drop postoperatively, others have reported increased intraoperative bleeding when combined with certain anesthetics; thus, further research on optimal use and drug interactions is warranted[1].
