Overview
This combination chemotherapy regimen, consisting of epirubicin, cisplatin, leucovorin, and 5-fluorouracil, is being investigated by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine for the treatment of advanced gallbladder carcinoma. The regimen utilizes multiple mechanisms of action to target cancer cells: epirubicin acts as an anthracycline that intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II; cisplatin is a platinum-based agent that creates DNA crosslinks to inhibit replication; and 5-fluorouracil is an antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase, with its efficacy enhanced by the addition of leucovorin. In clinical study NCT00115934, this four-drug protocol serves as the backbone to evaluate the potential synergistic effects of adding somatostatin.
