Overview

EPI-cell is a neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimen evaluated for the treatment of primary breast cancer, specifically investigated by Asklepios Krankenhaus Weißenfels. The regimen consists of a sequential administration schedule: three cycles of epirubicin and docetaxel followed by three cycles of carboplatin and docetaxel. Epirubicin is an anthracycline that acts by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, thereby preventing DNA replication and inducing apoptosis. Docetaxel is a taxane that stabilizes microtubules, leading to cell cycle arrest. Carboplatin is a platinum-based alkylating agent that forms covalent DNA cross-links, interfering with DNA repair and synthesis. The EPI-cell study (Phase 2) was designed to assess the pathological complete response (pCR) and the feasibility of breast-conserving surgery in patients with primary breast cancer.
