epirubicin + raltitrexed is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of the anthracycline epirubicin and the thymidylate synthase inhibitor raltitrexed. This combination is primarily investigated and utilized in the treatment of primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), frequently administered via transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Epirubicin acts by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting DNA topoisomerase II, which leads to DNA strand breaks and apoptosis. Raltitrexed is a quinazoline folate analogue that specifically and potently inhibits thymidylate synthase (TS), resulting in the depletion of thymidine triphosphate and the subsequent inhibition of DNA synthesis. Clinical research, notably from institutions such as The First Hospital of China Medical University, has evaluated this combination for its efficacy in improving local control and survival outcomes in patients with unresectable liver cancer.
