Overview

epoCat (KIND-510a) is a long-acting recombinant feline erythropoietin developed by Kindred Biosciences for the management of non-regenerative anemia in cats, particularly associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects approximately half of older cats and leads to decreased endogenous erythropoietin production.[1][2] Engineered for prolonged half-life to overcome immunogenicity issues of human erythropoietins in cats, it rapidly increases hematocrit (a measure of red blood cell count), with statistically significant improvements seen as early as Week 1 and sustained through Week 6 in a pilot field study of 23 anemic cats, where 95.5% achieved treatment success (≥30% hematocrit increase or normalization).[1][2] The drug also improved health-related quality of life domains including vitality, comfort, and emotional wellbeing, and appeared well-tolerated based on preliminary safety data.[1][2]
