Overview

Equine anti-Ebola virus F(ab')2 is a passive immunotherapy consisting of F(ab')2 antibody fragments derived from the serum of horses immunized with Ebola virus antigens. By using pepsin digestion to remove the Fc portion of the immunoglobulin G (IgG) molecules, the resulting F(ab')2 fragments retain their bivalent antigen-binding capacity while significantly reducing the risk of Fc-mediated side effects, such as serum sickness or antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). The primary mechanism of action involves the high-affinity binding of these fragments to the Ebola virus glycoprotein (GP), which neutralizes the virion and prevents its attachment and entry into host target cells. This therapeutic was notably developed and deployed for emergency use during major outbreaks, such as the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, particularly by researchers at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in China.
