Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ertapenem + meropenem is a dual carbapenem antibiotic combination therapy used primarily for treating infections caused by carbapenem-resistant organisms. This combination works through a synergistic mechanism where ertapenem acts as a "suicide substrate" that binds to and saturates carbapenemase enzymes, allowing meropenem to reach its target and exert its bactericidal effect. The combination has shown particular efficacy against infections caused by IMP or NDM-producing organisms with lower minimum inhibitory concentrations.
