Overview
Erxian Decoction + Chaihu Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination therapy developed and studied by researchers at Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED), particularly in perimenopausal women. The combination is designed to address the TCM etiology of liver depression and kidney deficiency, which is thought to underlie ocular surface dysfunction during hormonal transitions. Erxian Decoction (comprising herbs like Epimedium and Curculigo) functions to tonify kidney yin and yang and regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, potentially exerting phytoestrogenic effects. Chaihu Decoction (typically Xiao Chaihu Tang or a variation) serves to soothe the liver, harmonize the Shao Yang, and regulate the autonomic nervous system. Together, these formulas aim to improve tear film stability, increase tear secretion, and reduce ocular surface inflammation by modulating systemic endocrine levels and local inflammatory mediators.
