Overview

**Erythromycin + benzoyl peroxide** is a fixed-dose topical combination medication for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, reducing the growth of acne-causing bacteria such as Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes. Benzoyl peroxide is a bactericidal agent that releases free-radical oxygen species, oxidizing bacterial proteins and reducing the bacterial load on the skin. In addition to its antibacterial effects, benzoyl peroxide has keratolytic and desquamative properties, helping to clear pore blockages. The combination is designed to be more effective and reduce resistance selection compared to erythromycin alone[1][2][3][5][6][7].
