erythropoietin + granulocyte-colony stimulating factor

This investigational combination therapy consists of erythropoietin (EPO) and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), which was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial led by the University Hospital Muenster. The study investigated the subcutaneous administration of these two hematopoietic growth factors to assess their influence on associative learning and motor skills in patients suffering from chronic stroke or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein hormone that primarily stimulates red blood cell production by binding to the erythropoietin receptor, while G-CSF stimulates the bone marrow to produce granulocytes. Beyond their hematopoietic roles, both agents are hypothesized to provide neuroprotection and promote neuroregeneration through mechanisms such as anti-apoptotic activity, enhancement of neurogenesis, and the promotion of angiogenesis in the central nervous system.
