erythropoietin + iron supplements refers to a combination therapeutic regimen investigated by Sheba Medical Center for the management of anemia of prematurity in very low birth weight infants. Erythropoietin (EPO) is a recombinant glycoprotein that mimics the endogenous hormone produced by the kidneys, acting as an agonist at the erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) on erythroid progenitor cells to stimulate their proliferation and differentiation into mature red blood cells. Because EPO-stimulated erythropoiesis increases the demand for iron to synthesize hemoglobin, iron supplementation is co-administered to prevent iron deficiency and ensure effective red blood cell production. This specific study by Sheba Medical Center (NCT00164411) was designed to assess the safety of this regimen, particularly its potential impact on the development and progression of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition where abnormal blood vessel growth occurs in the retina.
