Overview

erythropoietin + probiotic is a combination therapy being developed by Badr University for the management of resistant anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing regular hemodialysis. The combination consists of erythropoietin (EPO), a recombinant glycoprotein that stimulates erythropoiesis by binding to the erythropoietin receptor on red blood cell precursors, and a probiotic supplement, specifically Lactobacillus acidophilus. The probiotic is used as an adjuvant to improve the hematological response to EPO, potentially by modulating the gut microbiota, reducing systemic inflammation, and decreasing the levels of uremic toxins that contribute to erythropoietin resistance. This therapeutic approach is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial to assess its efficacy in increasing erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) responsiveness and improving overall anemia management in the CKD population.
