Overview

Escitalopram + sertraline is a combination of two selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), each used individually to treat major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders. Both drugs act primarily by inhibiting the serotonin transporter (SERT), increasing synaptic serotonin levels in the brain. Escitalopram is notable for its high selectivity for SERT and additional allosteric inhibition, which may contribute to its efficacy and tolerability. Sertraline also selectively inhibits SERT but has a slightly broader pharmacological profile compared to escitalopram. The combination of these two SSRIs is not standard clinical practice due to an increased risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by excessive serotonergic activity[1][4][8]. Both drugs are developed for the treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and related conditions.
