Escitalopram + ziprasidone is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs used together, primarily studied for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who have persistent symptoms despite initial antidepressant therapy. Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs) that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic cells, thereby enhancing mood and anxiety regulation. Ziprasidone is an atypical antipsychotic that acts as an antagonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, with additional activity at other serotonergic and adrenergic receptors. The combination has been investigated as adjunctive therapy when escitalopram alone does not provide sufficient symptom relief. Clinical trials have shown that adding ziprasidone to ongoing escitalopram treatment can improve depressive symptoms more than escitalopram alone, though with a higher rate of discontinuation due to adverse effects[2][4][9].
