Overview

Escitalopram + zolpidem is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs used together, typically in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who also experience insomnia. Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin levels in the brain and is primarily indicated for depression and anxiety disorders. Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic agent that acts as an agonist at the GABA-A receptor, promoting sedation and sleep. When administered concomitantly, this combination can improve insomnia symptoms and some aspects of next-day functioning in patients with MDD but does not significantly enhance antidepressant effects beyond escitalopram alone[2]. The combination may increase the risk of additive central nervous system depression, including drowsiness, somnolence, impaired judgment, dizziness, fatigue, amnesia, and other related adverse effects[1][2]. Careful monitoring or dose adjustment may be required.
