This triple therapy is a combination regimen consisting of a proton pump inhibitor (esomeprazole) and two antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin), specifically utilized for the eradication of *Helicobacter pylori* infection. Esomeprazole acts by inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase pump in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing acid secretion and creating a more favorable environment for antibiotic activity. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis, while clarithromycin is a macrolide that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This specific combination was evaluated by The University of Hong Kong in a randomized crossover trial to compare its efficacy and tolerability as an empirical first-line and second-line treatment against a 5-day bismuth-containing quadruple therapy.
