Overview
Esomeprazole + itopride is a fixed-dose combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, functional dyspepsia, chronic gastritis, and postoperative gastric stasis. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells. Itopride is a prokinetic agent that enhances gastrointestinal motility by antagonizing dopamine D2 receptors and inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity in the gut. This dual mechanism reduces stomach acid production while improving gastric emptying and motility, providing symptomatic relief from heartburn, bloating, nausea, indigestion, and related symptoms[2][3][5][7]. The combination is especially useful in patients who do not respond adequately to PPI monotherapy[8].
