Overview
Esomeprazole + sodium bicarbonate is an immediate-release oral combination therapy developed to treat acid-related gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing stomach acidity. Sodium bicarbonate acts as an antacid, neutralizing existing stomach acid and protecting esomeprazole from degradation in the acidic environment of the stomach, which allows for faster absorption and onset of action compared to enteric-coated formulations. This combination is particularly useful for patients requiring rapid symptom relief or those who cannot tolerate delayed-release formulations[4][5].
