Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Esomeprazole magnesium + sodium bicarbonate is a fixed-dose combination product containing the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) esomeprazole and the antacid sodium bicarbonate. Esomeprazole, the S-enantiomer of omeprazole, works by covalently binding to and inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the gastric proton pump) on the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells, which is the final step in acid production. Sodium bicarbonate serves a dual purpose: it provides immediate neutralization of existing gastric acid to relieve symptoms and acts as a buffer to protect the acid-labile esomeprazole from degradation in the stomach. This protection allows for the use of an immediate-release formulation rather than delayed-release enteric coating, potentially leading to faster absorption and quicker onset of acid suppression. Developed by Hainan Lingkang Pharmaceutical, this combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the reduction of risk for gastric ulcers.
