A combination of essential oils and chlorhexidine is used as an antiseptic and antimicrobial agent, primarily in oral care (mouthwashes) and skin antisepsis. Essential oils commonly included are thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, menthol, tea tree oil, lemongrass oil, cinnamon oil, manuka oil, arnica oil, eucalyptus oil, grapefruit oil or their components such as menthol and thymol. Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeasts and some viruses. When combined with essential oils—either in mouthwash or topical formulations—the mixture demonstrates synergistic antimicrobial activity against both planktonic bacteria and biofilms (notably Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus plantarum for oral use; Staphylococcus epidermidis for skin), often allowing lower concentrations of chlorhexidine to be used while maintaining efficacy. This combination may also enhance antifungal effects (e.g., against Candida auris). The mechanism involves disruption of microbial cell membranes by both agents; essential oils provide additional membrane-disrupting activity that can potentiate the effect of chlorhexidine[2][5][7]. The primary indications are dental plaque reduction/gingivitis prevention (oral rinses) and skin/medical device disinfection.
